Council of Pyrmont/Ultimo Associations (CUPA)
The Council of Ultimo/Pyrmont Associations (CUPA) was formed in May 2005 when 14 organisations were represented at a meeting convened by the Ultimo Pyrmont Chamber of Commerce, in Sydney Town Hall. (See attached record)
The inaugural meeting described CUPA’s purpose in these terms:
to bring together all interested community groups to work together to develop a strategic plan for Pyrmont-Ultimo and to apply for funds under the Community Grants Program. Apart from the general good of groups working together, the community would have more clout and more chance of success negotiating with the City Council, the RTA, etc, if the whole community could be represented by one organisation, and if the strategic plan was developed by all the groups working together.
Co-convenors Bronwyn Connolly and Mary Mortimer were to recommend how to proceed: email everyone to get ideas circulating; publicise CUPA; encourage participation in the Council and its working groups from as broad a cross-section of the community as possible.
These plans were over-ambitious. CUPA discovered more realistic goals for a smaller membership. Members meets once a quarter, in the Harris Community Centre: these meetings inform community groups of each other’s activities, and coordinate campaigns for resident services.
